Graphic Design Is All Around Us

Take a look around your classroom. There is a cleaning roster on the wall, a hand-washing poster near the sink, your notebook covers, and an arts show banner at the school gate. All of these were made with graphic design.

What is graphic design?

Graphic design is the way we arrange words, pictures and colours so that a message is easy to understand and pleasant to look at. A designer does not only make things pretty. The main job is to help people understand the message quickly.

For example, imagine two cleaning rosters. The first is written in tiny, crowded letters. The second has a big title, the days lined up neatly, and a different colour for each day. Which one can you read faster? The second, of course. That is the power of design.

A designer's steps

  1. Decide the message. What do you want to say? For example: "Class cleanliness contest on Friday."
  2. Know your readers. Who will see it? Your classmates, younger students or parents?
  3. Choose a size. A wall poster, a small card, or a picture to share in the class group chat?
  4. Arrange the content. Put the title, pictures and details in the right places.
  5. Check again. Can the words be read? Are there any typos?

Meet Canva

Canva is a design app you open in a web browser on a laptop or as an app on a tablet. Canva for Education is a special school version that is free for teachers and students. Usually your teacher will invite you to a Canva class with a link or a class code.

Canva has thousands of templates, which are ready-made example designs that you can change. When you open a design, you will see three important parts:

  • The side panel on the left, with menus such as Design, Elements, Text and Uploads.
  • The page in the middle, where your design lives.
  • The toolbar above the page, which changes depending on what you click.
Remember: a good design is clear first, and pretty second.
